Data residency requirements ? Data stays onsite?

    Everyone,

Is anyone aware of whether there are federal data residency requirements for school or student data - that it be maintained on site behind a district firewall, or are cloud options fine to consider for all types of school district data, including special education, disciplinary, SIS data etc?

    Thanks in advance.

If I understand your question correctly, there is no requirement that you keep student data on site.  It's fine to use a cloud service provider for all of your education records, and many do.  There is also no requirement that the data be hosted in state, or even in country, although many districts do prefer a US tenant for the data, as they sometimes feel that if it is hosted outside of the US, it could potentially hinder their ability to maintain the required direct control.

Before engaging with a cloud service provider, be sure to check out the CoSN Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning Toolkit.  I'm sure there are also many here who can share their perspectives and experiences on all of the other nuts and bolts involved in transitioning to the cloud.

I am not sure if this is helpful to your specific needs but we released this Security and Compliance Quick Reference Guide at CoSN 2018.

I am glad to answer any questions you have.

    I haven't heard about this.

I assume it will cause enormous problems for schools with Chromebooks, which is now the predominant platform in K-12 technology.
