Has your district upgraded to Cat 6 cables?

The FCC is considering adjusting the E-rate program's aggregate cap, based on lower than expected demand during the past two programs years.

CoSN is reaching out to its members for help in better understanding the variables impacting E-rate demand and one of the specific issues we are examining is district installation of Category 6 network cables. We need information from as many members as possible about Cat 6 upgrades, including all related costs.

We would also like to identify a few members who would be willing to share actual costs and speak with CoSN and Education Superhighway team about Cat 6.

Thanks in advance for your help in providing this information. Do let me know if there are any questions.

We just completed a infrastructure project replacing older Cat 5/5e with Cat 6 (roughly 400~ drops) and 10GB fiber cabling (internal/external) this past summer across our entire district and touching all buildings. We also replaced all switches...

I can and would be willing to share what we spent as well as what was covered by both the E-Rate program and a Massachusetts IT Grant we received. Assuming this would be done off this discussion board?

    Let me know...

We recently rewired our entire building with Cat-6, replacing Cat-5 cable installed during a renovation 18-19 years ago.  I can share our costs as well.  The interesting part is there are additional costs for removal of the old cables (building code in our area does not permit cut/non-terminated cables to be left in the walls or ceilings).

Since many new access points support or require two drops, it could be a valuable E-Rate eligible service.

    Hello,

All our new construction/buildings come with CAT6 and then CAT6A for the wireless access points. Otherwise, all our buildings are at this time CAT6 pretty much. Related to this, we also looked at PON based infrastructure, but it was not conducive for us. Also related, it will be interesting to see where ax and further developments take all this.

We have replaced all of the Cat5 and 5E cabling in all but one of our buildings. We did not use Erate funds to pay for it. We are saving the Cat2 funds for this years wireless upgrade to the 2 of our buildings that qualify.
