Drones

We have received a grant to purchase drones. We intend to train students and have them program and fly them. I am wondering if other school districts are having their faculty get either a COA or a pilot's license from the FAA in order for them to train and supervise students. Also, if you have any policies governing drone use could you share?

    Thanks,   Jean

    Jean,
Daryl Scott from Winslow Township Schools (NJ) would love to hear from you. They are doing incredible things. He's working with the FAA, whose tech center is local to him. You can find him and more at their website https://highschool.winslow-schools.com/. Search "drone" to see their curriculum, awards, certifications, etc.

    Jean,

We have a drone program as part of our Law Enforcement CTE program.  We don't have specific Board policies about drones.  However, the teachers in that program have completed a basic flight course by DART Drones.

FAA rules are continually changing and we are currently following FAA rules in the instruction we are providing students. COA is very difficult to attain, and our best option is to receive our commercial 107b drone license. It was recommended that we get our license because we are teaching others. However, according to the FAA the license is only required if you "making money" or conducting a for profit business.

We follow FAA rules as far as flight distance, not flying over crowds, in sight flight, etc.

We have been working through Utah State University to develop state and national partners for drone competitions.  Here is the link to their website.  ROAVcopter Challenge  I would also suggest starting a club through the AMAA for insurance purposes and to standardize your safety practices.  Here is their link.  Membership Enrollment | Academy of Model Aeronautics

We are also working with early adopters from industry.  UAV is helping us with training on drones, battery science, radio programming, and simulators to prepare students to receive a professional drone operators license and higher end racing.  UAV also builds durable drones that stand up to the abuse that occurs during the learning curve of beginners.
